Our cult favourite Leather Protector is water-based so it wouldn’t seal in and dry out the leather over time, nor does it contain oils that will stain your bag. It can also be used on all leather types except for suede, nubuck and patent. The great thing is that it’s a leather conditioner and protector in one, so not only will it protect the leather, it will also nourish and condition it! A friendly reminder that if you have a light-coloured bag, make sure you’re not wearing it with dark pants or jackets or denim. A leather protector provides layer of protection but can only do so much in avoiding colour transfers so the best way to avoid a costly trip to the leather repairer is to be careful what you wear when carrying the bag!

If the leather is older and more delicate , we recommend going straight in with the Leather Protector to condition first, as the alcohol may have damaged the protective layer on the leather and a cleanser could cause more damage.

This is because to remove ingrained colour transfer you will need a strong professional-grade cleaner that can strip the colour transfer, but doing so will also strip your bag of its existing colour pigment. However, if you want to give it a go at home in case it is just superficial colour transfer that is sitting on top of the leather, try the following steps:
What to do
✔ Tend to the colour transfer as soon as possible. The sooner you clean it the more likely the colour has not fully settled into the leather and therefore can still be removed
✔ Clean the area small circular motions with Luxegarde’s Leather Cleanser with slight pressure. STOP if original colour is lifting from the bag.
✔Take your time – it may take a few goes. Allow the leather to rest in between.
✔ If colour transfer remains after a few attempts, do not attempt again and take to a professional leather repairer
What not to do
✘ Do NOT use a magic eraser. This is literally sanding off a layer of the leather
✘ Do NOT use alcohol or hairspray. This will damage the leather finish and dry out the surface
How to prevent future colour transfer
Our Luxegarde Combo Pack has all the basics you need to clean and protect your favourite designer bag - now with free worldwide shipping!
A case study

]]>We’ve been testing a few home remedies and have found one that has worked really well and we would like to share this with you! We actually replicated the damage on our own Felicie and created a quick video to show you how it all works!
Why doesn't my usual leather care products take off the stain?
Now the reason why the usual leather care products can’t fix this is because similar to patent, the alcohol has actually degraded the clear coating on top of the canvas so it’s not actually a stain as such.
Now some of you might ask, why doesn't this happen when I wipe my bag down with alcohol wipes all the time and it hasn’t created these marks? The reason is when you’re wiping your bag with high alcohol content, it evaporates pretty quickly. With hand sanitisers, the alcohol is suspended in the gel (the purpose it to prevent the alcohol from evaporating too quickly). Unfortunately This means the alcohol is trapped in the gel when it’s on your bag therefore it has more time to unfortunately corrode the plastic coating. Oh, and please don't use alcohol wipes to wipe down your bags! It can strip your bag of colour, degrade the plastic coating of LV canvas bags etc etc
So what can I do to remove the hand sanitiser mark?
This is actually super quick and easy to do! Here are the steps:
1) Use Luxegarde’s Leather Cleanser to remove any sticky gel residue that’s still on the bag
2) The secret here is... oil! We used marula oil which is very light but moisturising. Other oils readily available at home such as coconut oil or olive oil should work too, but please use with care! You only need the tiniest amount (remember oil can be damaging to the bag too!
3) You should see the canvas darkening nicely now. Wipe off and use Leather Cleanser to take off excess oil
4) If necessary, repeat steps 1-3 and voila you're done! The coated canvas on your Louis Vuitton bag should be good as new!
Disclaimer: This is a home remedy so please attempt restoration at your own risk. This has worked well on our newer LV pieces and there is no guarantee this will work on vintage pieces where the coating may already be compromised. If in doubt, please take the bag to a professional leather repairer for restoration.

]]>1) Adds space in the wallet on chain - one of the biggest complaints is that an WOC doesn't fit very much. If you look at the photo below, you can see just how much this SLG actually expands with a Luxegarde base shaper in place (without actually stretching the leather).
2) High Quality Felt Does Not Stretch or Mark the Leather - We opted for felt rather than PU leather, as the latter is too rigid and can cause marks with long term use when pushed against the side of the Wallet On Chain.
3) Prevents Sagging of Base - Because the base of a Wallet On Chain is only leather, heavier item will create unsightly bumps and sagging at the bottom. Our Base Shaper will help to prevent the base from sagging.
4) Thin & Lightweight - Given there is not much space in a WOC to begin with, we purposely designed our base shaper with ultra-thin felt. We also added a thin layer of plastic between the felt to maintain shape without adding bulk.
5) Side Protection - We have also added flexible flaps to the side of our Wallet on Chain base shaper. After a couple of accidents with uncapped pens in our bags we figured that these flaps will help prevent the sides from being market by pens or lip pencils that uncap themselves in your Wallet On Chain!

Steps:
1) Pump Leather Protector into the Applicator Cloth, spread it around the cloth to ensure even application, and gently apply to the vachetta leather

3) If you expect to be caught in the rain, apply a second coat for extra protection

To show you that our Leather Protector really works, we took the liberty of risking one of our favourite bags - the Noe BB - to show you why it is so important to protect and waterproof vachetta leather before use, and just how well our product works! We applied our Leather Protector to one side and then dropped some water on both sides - watch below for the magic!
You can see how the water droplets sat on the surface of the protected vachetta leather and rolled right off but it sank right through the unprotected leather! For this protection to be effective, reapply once every 2-3 months, and more often for heavily used bags.
For bags like the Neverfull, Alma, Noe, Speedy, Pochette Accessories and Pochette Metis where vachetta is on the handle, ensure you're not using hand cream before picking up the bag. With purses likes the Pochette Metis where the handle is small, you can always wrap a twilly or bandeau around the vachetta leather handle if you're really concerned about maintaining the vachetta leather.
For the Noe variations where the entire base of the bag is vachetta leather and without the little metal feet that protect the bottom, it is extremely important protect the leather - imagine accidentally setting your bag down on a table with water droplets!
Unlike other spray protectors that only waterproofs your vachetta leather, our Leather Protection also contains conditioning ingredients to nourish the leather without darkening the leather!

1. Act fast!
The "fresher" the stain is the more likely it can be completely removed. Keep a spare Ink Off stick in your purse or cupboard to remove stains as soon as it happens!
2. Preparing the leather
Always test in an inconspicuous area first. Do not use on suede and nubuck leathers. Do not use on unprotected leather. The Ink Off works by lifting colour - if the leather is unprotected it will remove colour on the bag as well.
Cover the surrounding area of the mark with masking tape. The Ink Off stick will take off the stain almost immediately but you want to prevent that from smearing onto other areas of the leather.
3. Remove the stain
Now this is where the magic happens!

]]>We get so many questions from our customers asking how to best look after vachetta leather so we thought we'd write a post to answer the most common questions!
The Basics:
Vachetta is the name given to a type of premium cowhide leather that is largely untreated and unsealed. This means by nature, vachetta leather is more susceptible to water stains, grime and sunlight compared to other leather types.
What we love about vachetta is the patina process. The leather develops into a beautiful golden honey colour with use. The depth of patina depends on a variety of factors including how often the bag is used, exposure to sunlight etc. This means your vachetta will be unique with no two bags ageing the same way!
Treating and Protecting Brand New Vachetta:
We always recommend protecting your new purse before use. Luxegarde's Leather Protector is specially formulated to create an invisible barrier that protects against stains and grime without darkening the leather. In the below photo, we have treated the right side of this brand new vachetta strap yet you cannot tell the difference at all!
For a detailed instructions on how to protector vachetta leather and see live how effective Luxegarde's Leather Protector is at preventing water stains - see our post here: Why You Need to Waterproof Louis Vuitton Vachetta Leather Before Use
Patina:
We have seen a lot of blogs recommending using baby wipes to accelerate the patina process - we would caution against doing so unless the vachetta has already developed a dark patina. Baby wipes contain ingredients such as moisturising agents, oils and other additives that can remove the leather’s tanning agents, leading to a loss of colour and cracking. Worse still, it could leave stains on the leather particularly with light vachetta. Instead, we recommend regularly protecting vachetta and letting it patina naturally over time.
Cleaning Vachetta:
Forgot to protect you bag before use and got caught in the rain? Spray Luxegarde Leather Cleanser into a cloth, rub the cloth to foam up the cleanser, and gently work in small sections. Our Cleanser is light and specially formulated to give a uniform finish, whilst also removing any dust or dirt on the bag. Don't forget to restore and nourish the leather with a light coating of leather protector after cleaning.
Other Tips for Looking After Vachetta:
Conclusion:
Looking after vachetta might sound high maintenance but it doesn't have to be! Here at Luxegarde, we've all about keeping leather care simple but effective so you can spend more time enjoying your favourite purse. Our Luxegarde Combo Pack has all the basics you need to clean and protect your favourite LV bag - now with free worldwide shipping!

]]>
In this article, we take you through the 5 most common mistakes to avoid to care for your luxe leather goods!
]]>Looking after your favourite Chanel or Louis Vuitton leather bags doesn't have to be difficult. In this article, we take you through the 5 most common mistakes to avoid to care for your luxe leather goods!
Mistake 1: Using baby wipes to clean leather bags
One thing we always hear is that "if it's good enough for a baby's bum it must be okay for my bag!". Unfortunately whilst baby wipes work well in removing dirt and grime, they contain ingredients such as moisturising agents, oils and other additives that can remove the leather’s tanning agents, leading to a loss of colour and cracking. Worse still, it could leave stains on the leather! Some of our customer have asked if they could use baby wipes to clean the vachetta leather on their Louis Vuitton bags - we would highly recommend avoiding doing so unless the vachetta has already developed a dark honey patina.
You should use a water-based, oil-free, and pH-neutral cleanser specially formulated for delicate leather products such as Luxegarde's Leather Cleanser. If you've run out and you're in a pickle, use a damp cloth and wipe dry afterwards.
Mistake 2: Not regularly wiping down your bag
We know we know, it’s such a hassle having to wipe your bag regularly. But what if we told you doing do can save you expensive trips to the leather repairer? You can prolong the life of your leather bags by regularly wiping dirt and grime (that may not be visible) and it takes all of 30 seconds!
Even if you can’t be bothered wiping your bag after every use, ensure you’re giving it a good wipe with a soft dry cloth before storing. Our All-Rounder Cloths are perfect for regular wipe-downs and and spot cleans. If it's a bag that is in heavy rotation, ensure you're also regularly conditioning it with a water-based conditioner that moisturises the leather to ensure it remains supple. Our Leather Protector is suitable for most leather types and will also create an invisible protective barrier on the surface of the bag to protect the leather from dust and dirt.
Mistake 3: Not tending to stains immediately
Sometimes it's easy just to bury your head in the sand when you've accidentally stained your bag. But the longer you leave a mark or oil stain, the more difficult it is to remove. Some leather without a protective coating such as aniline leather are absorbent and over time, a stain can seep deeper into the leather
The Leather Cleanser will assist in the removal of water or oil stains. Protecting your leather bags before use with Leather Protector will make the stains much easier to remove. Pen marks on the other hand are notoriously difficult - use a specialised product such as Luxegarde’s Ink Off. The product is the size of a lipbalm and can be easily carried with you in case you need to immediately remove a pesky pen stain.
Mistake 4: Storing bags in boxes or plastic containers
Leather bags are just like our skin and need to breathe! Storing them in a box can cause mould to form, particularly if you live in areas with high humidity. Can you imagine taking out your treasured Chanel lambskin bag only to find mould spots inside?
We recommend that you stuff your bags or purses with acid-free tissue paper or a soft cloth to help retain shape, and store them in a dustbag to protect from dust and sunlight. If you must store them in boxes, place a couple of desiccant sachets in the box to absorb excess moisture.
Mistake 5: Displaying bags in direct sunlight
There's nothing better than seeing your babies displayed in their full glory in a glass cabinet. However, sunlight is harsh and can discolour or dull your leather bags, or worse yet, cause them to become dry and brittle with prolonged exposure.
Position the glass cabinet in a shaded area of the room if possible, or cover with a curtain during times of the day when sunlight is the particularly harsh.
It’s the age old question when it comes to Chanel purses and small leather goods: lambskin or caviar? Chanel lambskin is unprotected lambskin leather whilst caviar is effectively stamped calfskin (Chanel also uses caviar lambskin but for the purpose of this article we are referring to calfskin caviar). Whilst some refer to caviar as grained calfskin, this is actually incorrect – the “grains” on caviar are artificially stamped whilst any grains you may see on unprocessed calfskin are natural grains on the leather.
Look:
Lambskin has a shinier and glossier finish compared to caviar, and has a much more luxurious and striking look (in my humble opinion!) Lambskin is more porous and fantastic at taking on dye, so coloured lambskin bags are so much more vibrant and beautiful.
Durability:
This is where lambskin often falls short compared to caviar. Calfskin on its own is sturdier than lambskin, and the pebbled finish of caviar leather also renders higher durability. For an everyday bag, caviar is more durable and able to stand more wear. Lambskin on the other had is more prone to scratches and scruffs.
However, lambskin is not as fragile as you might think! Light surface scratches can be easily buffed out by applying a thin layer of The Leather Protector, waiting until it has dried completely, and then gently buffed with The Buffer cloth. Lambskin that are more tightly stitched are also more durable. My Chanel lambskin zip purse gets thrown around in my bag, rubbed against cards, keys etc but does not scratch up at all.
Cost:
Same. Did you know that a few years ago, lambskin products were priced higher than caviar as the leather was considered more luxurious!
Conclusion:
I think lambskin is the most iconic Chanel bag so for me I always deviate towards lambskin. A good leather care routine will ensure your bag remains looking its best. Wipe down your bag after each wear with The All-Rounder cloth, clean and protect regularly with The Leather Cleanser and The Leather Protector duo, and buff with the The Buffer cloths to maintain that beautiful smooth finish. Even if you put your bag through wear and tear, a good leather restorer should be able to fix it in no time.

]]>Start by wrapping the All Rounder cloth around your fingers and wipe in a gentle circular motion to remove dirt, debris and moisture from the leather surface. The All Rounder is made from an absorbent microfiber fabric and the fibers ensures effectively cleansing of the leather whilst still being soft on the leather surface.
The Leather Cleanser helps to remove stains and marks, as well as dirt and debris that’s not visible to the eye but could accumulate over time and deteriorate the state of the leather. The water-based formula is pH-neutral and gently cleanses the leather without overdrying.
Apply the Leather Cleanser directly onto the leather using a non-absorbent cloth such as The Applicator cloth to minimise product wastage.* Work in small sections as this prevents over-wetting of the leather, particularly with unfinished leathers.
Allow the leather to air-dry completely.
Use the Leather Protector to condition and protect the leather. The conditioning properties helps to ensure suppleness of leather whilst removing light surface scratches. The Leather Protector also forms an invisible barrier to protect against oil and water stains, including sweat and body oils.
Apply The Leather Protector to a new Applicator cloth, and massage it into the leather in small circular motions.* Allow to dry completely.
The specially designed the velvet cloth is butter soft to touch and can be used to wipe down your products after each use or to polish the leather after your leather care regime.
Once the 4 steps have been completed, store your leather product at a cool dry place, preferably in a dustbag and away from direct sunlight.
* As leathers differ across brand, style, and even product vintage; always make sure to test products in an inconspicuous spot first.

]]>In this post, we will focus on the most common types to ensure you can best look after your leather products.
Calf leather is made from cattle hide and is one of the most popular leather used in luxury fashion brands including Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Prada.
Natural cattle hide undergoes a natural tanning process to create a soft, supple appearance. The leather is then dyed to a desired colour and then may be glazed, patented, embossed or grained or left as a natural unsealed finish. When looking for high quality calf leather handbags, look out for discolourations, bruising and blemishes.
Everyday care, cleaning and conditioning, and proper storage will help to prolong the lifespan of your calf leather product.
Lambskin leather originates from unshorn lamb and has appeal due to its buttery soft texture. It is commonly used in smaller handbags and clutches by brands such as Chanel and Burberry. There are two varieties, shearling lambskin which is napped, soft and similar to suede; and smooth lambskin which is a soft, fine-grained leather. A major drawback of lambskin leather is that it is less durable and can more susceptible to damage or deformation
On top of the basic care tips which you should be following for lambskin leather, it is particularly important to use a protector to prevent staining, dye transfer, water and sunlight damage.
Goatskin is one of the most durable leathers used for luxury handbags and shoes. Whilst very durable and resistant to light scratches, the trade off is that goatskin is a lot more stiff to touch compared to lambskin. However, this is still a natural skin and will need to be properly cared for to prolong the life of the leather. It is also still susceptible to denting so always store properly.
Suede is made by splitting animal hide to reveal the fuzzy underside. Suede leather is mostly commonly made from lamb, but can also be made from calf, deer, goat or pig. Suede is popular due to being more durable, having a soft texture and brushed appearance. A couple of drawbacks however are that suede absorbs moisture easily, and can also become dirty easily.
To clean suede, use a suede brush to lift away debris. To remove oil and grease marks, apply cornflour overnight. Use a dedicated suede or nubuck cleaning solution for more stubborn stains. To protect suede, use a protector as soon as you have purchased the suede good, as it acts as a barrier against dirt and water stains.
Patent leather has a glossy appearance due to a lacquer which is applied to the surface in the final preparation stages of the leather. Cowhide leather is most commonly used, although sheep, pigs and reptile skins are also used.
For routine cleaning, use The Buffer cloth to wipe the surface of the leather.
