How to remove colour transfer from designer leather purses

Accidentally wore your favourite beige purse with denim and got colour transfer on it?

Colour transfers are notoriously difficult to remove and we usually recommend that you take it to a professional leather repairer who will remove the colour transfer and re-colour the affected area back to the original colour. This is because to remove ingrained colour transfer you will need a strong professional-grade cleaner that can strip the colour transfer, but doing so will also strip your bag of its existing colour pigment. However, if you want to give it a go at home in case it is just superficial colour transfer that is sitting on top of the leather, try the following steps:

What to do

✔ Tend to the colour transfer as soon as possible. The sooner you clean it the more likely the colour has not fully settled into the leather and therefore can still be removed

✔ Clean the area small circular motions with Luxegarde’s Leather Cleanser with slight pressure. STOP if original colour is lifting from the bag.

✔Take your time – it may take a few goes. Allow the leather to rest in between.

✔ If colour transfer remains after a few attempts, do not attempt again and take to a professional leather repairer

What not to do

✘ Do NOT use a magic eraser. This is literally sanding off a layer of the leather

✘ Do NOT use alcohol or hairspray. This will damage the leather finish and dry out the surface

How to prevent future colour transfer

  • The number one rule is to not wear dark coloured clothing with light-coloured leather bags. Nothing is 100% effective except keeping light and dark coloured items separate!
  • Accidents do happen so make sure you’ve protecting your leather bag before use. Luxegarde's Leather Protector provides an invisible barrier on the surface of the leather – this means the colour will sit on top and will be easier to remove than unprotected leather

A case study

One of our clients accidentally wore her gorgeous Chanel iridescent white boy bag with a black jacket and unfortunately had colour transfer on her bag. Some of the black colour transfer had already stained into the leather but a few applications of Luxegarde Leather Cleanser was able to remove part of the colour transfer that was superficial on the leather surface.
